Tampa in the Running to Receive Google Fiber

If you haven't heard of Google Fiber, it might be because your Internet connection is too slow.

Tampa is one of the cities that is being considered to receive the new, faster infrastructure, which is delivering data at a rate of one gigabyte per second. To put that in perspective, the average download speed in the United States is 33.9 megabytes. As in, 0.0339 gigabytes.

In laymen's terms, if Tampa is chosen to receive Google Fiber, our Internet is going to become a lot faster, and as a result, we'll be able to move information like never before.

Tampa has the potential to join the ranks of such mighty metropolises as Austin, Kansas City, and Provo. Google Fiber has already chosen Atlanta to be its next location. The fact that Tampa is in the running is a huge marker of what's to come for our fair city. Clearly, someone has taken notice of us.

Now, all of this is not to say that there aren't cons as well. To bring Google Fiber here, we'll have to dig up roads, and that means tax money.

"To deliver Google Fiber, we will need to build thousands of miles of infrastructure as we build a new network, and will work on things like permitting, construction, infrastructure placement and lots more," spokesperson Brien Bell said. "We're rolling up our sleeves and working closely on joint planning process before we dig up any streets," he said.
